Last-minute D.C. summer vacations: New York beaches, the Appalachian Trail and the peaks of Virginia

It's been a long, hot summer. The neighborhood pool has lost its appeal, the summer blockbusters have all been watched and the mall perused.

It's time to get out of town and enjoy the last bits of summer freedom. Luckily, there are plenty of destinations that can provide exciting weekend trips with little planning.

New York is an obvious choice for a high-energy trip, and surprisingly, can be a good place to enjoy natural wonders as well as man-made architectural feats. Rockaway Beach is one of the largest beaches close to an urban center, and has gone through some drastic revitalization over the past few years.
