What more can the Fed do now?

As the U.S. economy staggers toward what could be another recession, the Federal Reserve doesn't have the tools to do much to help keep it steady -- though that won't necessarily stop the central bank from trying.

The Fed's current policy is to maintain ultra-low interest rates and use other unconventional steps, such as monetary easing, to pump up the economy. Last spring, the Fed purchased $600 billion in Treasury bonds to boost the money supply, a policy known as quantitative easing. But when that round bond-buying expired in June, the central bank declined to take any new action to loosen monetary policy on projections that economic growth would rebound in the second half of 2011.
