Ala. county leaders hope to decide finally whether to file record bankruptcy over sewer debt

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Commissioners in Alabama's largest county expect to vote on whether to settle with Wall Street or file the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

Jefferson County commissioners have delayed a decision for two weeks while negotiating with creditors. They started a public meeting Friday on whether to accept a settlement offer or file bankruptcy over more than $4 billion in debt.

Commissioners then went into an executive session behind closed doors. President David Carrington said they'll take action one way or the other after they come out.
