There’s a long road ahead for The Walking Dead fans between now and the Season 7 premiere this fall, especially considering a certain cliffhanger that’s been keeping them up at night. But at least now these loyal viewers have something to overanalyze in the throes of eager anticipation: a trailer.
At the Walking Dead Comic-Con panel Friday, a newly unveiled trailer features a montage of Negan’s possible victims, along with a look back at some of their most memorable moments. As show-runner Scott Gimple pointed out at the panel, the clip also includes imagery of a place called The Kingdom—a name that should set off the bells of recognition for Walking Dead comic fans—and the introduction of King Ezekiel (newcomer Khary Payton), a major character in the comics. (Not to mention his big-ass pet tiger, Shiva.)
From the looks of it, the world of Season 7 is going to be a lot darker and more expansive than ever before. Hopefully, whoever it is that suffers Death By Bat, the group recovers from the devastating loss quickly; they’ll probably want to stay sharper than ever with a guy like Negan looming over them. And when the big cliffhanger about who Negan murdered finally is resolved, fans will be satisfied, promises creator Robert Kirkman: “It will absolutely be worth it,” he swore Friday afternoon.
Who, precisely, will that person be? Naturally, there were no firm answers at the panel—though Christian Serratos, who plays Rosita, did tell the crowd that she's “excited to get to play this character,” then heaved a heavy sigh and finished, “for as long as I can.” Misdirection, or another clue? You be the judge.
AMC has been very secretive about what happened in the Season show’s 6 finale—and will likely continue to do so right up until the Season 7 premiere. (Why shoot eleven different endings unless you really planned to keep that secret quiet for as long as possible?) Fans have been reduced to, say, overanalyzing posters for any small hint at what’s to come. According to star Andrew Lincoln at Comic-Con: “It’s a really shitty start of the season, but hang in there.”
