NEW DELHI — Indian police arrested the country's leading anti-corruption campaigner and detained at least 1,400 of his supporters Tuesday morning, hours before the veteran activist was due to begin an indefinite hunger strike to demand tougher laws against graft.

Anna Hazare, dressed in homespun white cotton and a white cap, waved to supporters as he was driven away from his lodgings in the Indian capital in a police vehicle, after earlier being denied permission to stage his protest.

Fellow activists said Hazare, a 74-year-old disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, had begun his fast in police custody.
