Global markets mixed overnight, U.S. futures up, after big losses Wednesday

Financial markets in Asia and Europe remained topsy-turvy Thursday, and trading was mixed, a day after concerns over European debt triggered sharp declines in U.S. and European stocks.

U.S. stock futures were up before the opening bell, however, suggesting that the volatility on display every day since last weeks shows no sign of abating.

Major markets on both sides of the Atlantic declined Wednesday by more than 4 percent, with investors dumping financial stocks in particular amid signs that the debt crisis on the periphery of Europe is rapidly becoming a banking crisis at its core.
