‘The Leftovers,’ by Tom Perrotta

The bad news is that the Rapture passed us by in May. The good news is that we're still here to read Tom Perrotta's new novel about it.

This isn't, God forbid, the first time Perrotta has laid hands on the faithful. His previous book, "The Abstinence Teacher," preached a sermon of light satire about fundamentalist Christians and their influence on public education. His finest novel, "Little Children," drew its title from the Gospel of Mark and, like all his entertaining suburban novels, was about hypocrisy and the challenge of judging righteously in a morally ambiguous world. And now Perrotta has ascended from "Election," his wry story about high school politics, to focus on those whom the Elect have left behind.
