Legg Mason: John Isner beats James Blake to advance to quarterfinals

With a spot in the quarterfinals at stake, John Isner engaged in a peculiar sort of "self-talk," as sports psychologists call it, after splitting sets with fellow American and close pal James Blake at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic.

"If I don't win," Isner told himself, he later recounted, "I'm going to be really happy for James."

The thought was sincere. The two aren't just neighbors in Tampa, but frequent hitting partners, golfing buddies and hangout guys, with the 6-foot-9 Isner raiding so much food from Blake's refrigerator that Blake jokingly puts his losses in the thousands of dollars.
