North, South Korea exchange fire along disputed border

TOKYO — North and South Korea exchanged fire Wednesday along the disputed maritime border in the Yellow Sea, with forces from both sides launching artillery shells that dropped into the water.

South Korea's defense ministry said that North Korea first fired three shots toward the so-called Northern Limit Line (NLL) border. One hour later, after sending a warning broadcast to the North, South Korean naval forces returned with three shots of their own.

One of the North's shots, according to preliminary findings, landed on the southern side of the maritime line, defense ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok told reporters in Seoul.
