AT&T to fight DOJ attempt to block T-Mobile merger

AT&T vowed on Wednesday to challenge a Justice Department lawsuit that seeks to block the company's $39 billion bid for T-Mobile, setting up titanic legal war between the telecommunications giant and the Obama administration.

The company said it was surprised and disappointed by Justice's action because government officials had not indicated in repeated meetings that they would reject the deal. AT&T said it will ask a federal court for an expedited hearing on the matter.

Justice officials said they want to block the merger on the grounds that it would diminish competition in the wireless space and raise prices for consumers. The agency is asking the court to declare the deal in violation of U.S. antitrust law.
