Fairfax County opens parks to bowhunters for deer culling

Local bowhunters began culling deer in several Fairfax County parks Saturday as part of the county's effort to keep the animal's population in check.

Qualified participants in the county's urban archery program may legally shoot deer in selected parks Mondays through Saturdays through Feb. 11.

The archery program has drawn criticism from animal rights advocates since its inception in 2009. County wildlife biologist Victoria Monroe said it is the safest tool she has for managing deer, whose swelling numbers have created a host of problems in the suburban county.
