Gene Weingarten: Shut your speed trap

I am in traffic court, sitting beside my new personal hero. John Heraty, a 46-year-old social worker from Illinois, has burned two vacation days, flown to Washington on his own dime, and stayed overnight in a hotel, all to challenge a $125 speeding ticket. He invited me to watch.

I am an admirer of the grand, futile gesture — particularly if it involves Standing Up to The Man. In this case, The Man is not a man at all; John is here to rage against the machine, specifically, a camera that says he was going 36 miles an hour in a 25-mile-an-hour zone while in a rental car on a visit to the District in February.
