Indian police weigh conflicting claims about who plotted deadly bombing

NEW DELHI — A day after a powerful bomb explosion in the Indian capital, police have detained six men for questioning but appeared to be struggling for vital clues that could identify the group that carried out the attack.

The blast, from a bomb hidden in a briefcase at the entrance of a city court, killed 12 people and injured 75.

As investigators pursued scattered leads on Thursday based on forensic evidence, e-mails from two different groups asserting responsibility and witness accounts, analysts said the attackers could be a loose network of individuals from different cities and not a hierarchical, tightly held organization.
