Libyan rebels give Gaddafi loyalists another week to surrender

BENGHAZI, Libya — Libya's rebel leadership on Thursday gave government loyalists in Moammar Gaddafi's home town another week to surrender or face a military onslaught.

The extension — loyalists in Sirte will have until Sept. 10 to lay down their weapons, rather than a deadline of this Saturday — is intended to give residents of the city time to understand the new reality in Libya, said Col. Ahmed Bani, a spokesman for the rebel military force.

It was announced on a day when rebel leaders were meeting in Paris with representatives of 60 nations, including longtime Gaddafi allies Russia and China, to plan for Libya's reconstruction under a new government.
