Libyan rebels, trying to block escape routes, say they believe Gaddafi is surrounded

TRIPOLI -- Rebel forces say they are closing in on fugitive leader Moammar Gaddafi and trying to block a border crossing into Niger to prevent his escape.

Anis Sharif, a spokesman for the nascent government's military command, says rebel leaders believe Gaddafi is trapped within an area in Libya that has a radius of about 40 miles, and is largely surrounded by rebel forces.

But these leaders also believe Gaddafi has been plotting an escape route out of the country over the past few days, Sharif said. Rebel forces are working to take control of villages and checkpoints along Libya's vast border to stop any attempt he might make to flee the country.
