Virginia Tech vs. Appalachian State: No surprises for Hokies this time in 66-13 rout

BLACKSBURG, Va. — If there were any lingering concerns that Virginia Tech hadn't learned its lesson from last year's shocking upset to Football Championship Subdivision opponent James Madison, the Hokies put those doubts to rest in a matter of 47 seconds during their season opener Saturday against noted giant slayer Appalachian State.

Virginia Tech safety Antone Exum recovered a fumbled Mountaineers hand-off on the second offensive play of the day, and before six more seconds ticked off the clock, running back David Wilson burst around the left edge and crossed the end zone, igniting a 66-13 rout of the Mountaineers that turned into a glorified scrimmage after halftime for No. 13 Virginia Tech.
