Pity the German-speaking baritone who wants to give a song recital. You're up against the specters of some of the great masters of the 20th and 21st centuries: Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Hermann Prey, Matthias Goerne, Thomas Quasthoff. Not only are you supposed to sing well, but you're also supposed to be brilliantly analytical and intellectual.
