The first witness called Monday by Maryland Sen. Ulysses Currie's defense team described the 74-year-old lawmaker as "a wonderful person" and "nice," but insisted the Prince George's County Democrat is not known by his colleagues to be smart.

The testimony by Timothy F. Maloney, a well-known lawyer and former Maryland delegate, came as Currie's attorneys sought to draw a portrait of a politician capable of rising in the legislature but unlikely to carry out a complex bribery scheme.
