Alaska-based US Army Sgt. 1st Class Johnathan B. McCain, from Arizona, was killed in action on 13th November 2011 in Kandahar province, when an insurgent bomb exploded beside his patrol vehicle. 38-year-old Sgt. McCain served with the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Wainwright.
