Award on Mine Area Reclamation Handed to PTNNT

Today PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) received “2010 One Billion Indonesian Trees” Award from Indonesia's Forestry Ministry in the commemoration of the “Indonesia Tree Planting Day and National Planting Month of 2011” at Merah Putih Hill, Indonesia Peace and Security Centre, Sentul, Bogor, West Java, on Monday.

The Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan, S.E, M.M personally granted the Award to a number of businesses, universities, and community organizations, for their success and participation in forestry development and supporting the success of the 2011 One Billion Trees.

PTNNT is one of the three mine companies who received the award for mine reclamation category. The company has conducted reclamation despite of the mine operation is underway, i.e. by planting 1800 plants per hectare on 689 hectares of disturbed land.

The process began with cultivation of seedlings of 48 native species, which were directly planted on cleared areas so as to minimize exposed are and prevent erosion that may affect water quality.

Receiving the award, PTNNT President Director Martiono Hadianto extended his gratitude to the Government of Indonesia for a number of environmental awards, supervision and technical directives [provided to the company] in environmental management at Batu Hijau mine.

“In addition to the recognition for the good environmental performance, the award is a catalyst for us to continue to promote environmental management in line with the principles of environmental preservation and protection,” he added.

Currently, PTNNT is preparing reclamation work programs in order to carry out obligations as defined in the Minister of Forestry Regulation Number P63/2011 regarding Planting Guidelines for Forest Area Borrow and Use Permit Holders.

In addition to reclamation of ex-mine area, PTNNT supports the One Man One Tree and One Billion Indonesian Trees programs rolled out by the Forestry Ministry, among others through planting of local trees, marine pine, and mangrove in a number of villages around the mine.

“We do not only plant, but we also perform preservation (fertilization, spraying, embroidery, weeding) and regular monitoring until the plants are at minimum of 2-3 years old,” said PTNNT’s Senior Manager Environment Potro Soeprapto.

PTNNT also aims to plant 1000 trees at several senior high schools in Jereweh sub- district, West Sumbawa Regency in the near future. It aims to support the “2011 Indonesia Tree Planting Day and National Tree Planting Month.”

In environmental category, PTNNT has received PROPER awards for five times consecutively from the Environment Ministry and two Aditama Awards from the EMR Ministry.
