Does Deployment of US Marines Have Something to Do with Papua?

Indonesian Military Commander Admiral Agus Suhartono said the plan to place US 2,500 marines in Darwin, Australia, has nothing to do with Papua and will not affect Indonesia’s sovereignty because the marines are mainly dealing with natural disasters.

"It has nothing to do with the security situation in Papua, nor to control Freeport," Admiral Agus Suhartono said after closing the 2011 Panglima Cup shooting competition at the Army’s Reserve Command (Konstrad) complex in Cilodong, Depok, West Java Monday.

He said the deployment of the US marines follows the withdrawal of the marines from several countries in the Middle East and Asia, and to assist ASEAN countries in overcoming natural disasters, in quick response in disaster relief, but the Indonesian military would still examine and observe the deployment of the marines.

He added that the deployment of the US marines would not change Indonesia’s defense policy because its arrangement is based on threats and state financial capacity. It was planned to deploy 2,500 US marines in Darwin by 2017, but the planning and building of bases will be started in 2012.

When asked whether the Kostrad troops to Papua will be increased, Agus said the forces in Papua have been growing for the time being. The US marines will be deployed mainly in the eastern areas up to 2015 with deployments in Sorong, but it has nothing to do with Papua, except with island sea lanes."
