Report on US Soldiers at PT Freeport Denied

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto has denied a report that 70 US soldiers were working at US gold and copper mining company PT Freeport in Papua.

"On the other hand, there are indeed several military retirees working in Freeport and they were recruited through a process applied to civilians," the minister said in a press conference here on Saturday.

Based on clarification result, several security consultants recruited from security service companies are often used in other countries, he said. That condition is also applied in all Freeport branches or other mining companies in other countries

Meanwhile, a local news site on Saturday quoted a legislator as saying that 70 US soliders were working for PT Freeport Indonesia in Papua Province. Ali Kastela, a member of the House of Representatives (DPR)’s Commission VII said he found out about the presence of the US soldiers when he was on a working visit in PT Freeport mining company.

"During the working visit, there were 70 active US military men working in Freeport," Ali said during a meeting on a monitoring team of Papua and West Papua at the Parliament Building, here on Friday.
