200-pound tumor removed from man's leg

A Chicago plastic surgeon has removed a 200-pound, non-cancerous tumor from the leg of a Vietnamese man, according to news reports. The growth weighed more than the patient.

Dr. McKay McKinnon and his team performed the 10-hour surgery Thursday on Nguyen Duy Hai in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, reports Vietnamnet. Hai, 32, has had the tumor since he was 4, the BBC says, citing the AFP news agency. He had part of his right leg amputated when he was 17 to try to halt the growth of the tumor, which is linked to a rare genetic disorder.

Here's a photo of Hai before surgery.

McKinnon waived his fee for the operation, which was paid for by donations, the BBC says.

McKinnon is no stranger to big tumors: he removed a 176-pound growth from a Romanian woman in 2004. That tumor, also non-cancerous, covered most of her back and halfway down her thighs.
