Administration expelling Venezuelan diplomat

The Obama administration is expelling Venezuela's consul general after reports surfaced that she'd discussed cyberattacks against the United States while she was stationed in Mexico, The Miami Herald reports.

Livia Acosta Noguera has been given until Tuesday to leave the country, the Herald reports the State Department said.

Acosta's whereabouts are not clear and the Venezuelan consulate in Miami was closed on Sunday, according to the newspaper.

Venezuela's Ministry of Communication has not responded to the Herald's requests for interviews and President Hugo Chavez did not bring up the expulsion on a television program he hosts, the Herald reports.

Representatives for Miami's Venezuelan community told the Herald that the State Department should widen its probe into Chavez's dealings in the USA.

"We ask that they deepen their investigation into consular officials who remain and represent a threat to U.S. security and their residents," read a statement issued by the Organization of Politically Persecuted Venezuelans in Exile. "They will continue the actions developed by Livia Acosta on U.S. soil."

The government decision to expel Acosta comes after Univision Network broadcast a documentary about Iran's alleged terrorist activities in Latin America that included a recording of someone said to be Acosta saying to an alleged cyberpirate that he should give her the secret codes and locations of U.S. nuclear plants.
