Freight trains collide in NW Indiana

Three freight trains collided and derailed in northwestern Indiana this afternoon, triggering a massive chemical fire and causing multiple injuries, according to news reports.

Update at 4:28 p.m. ET: Details are still being sorted out, but a source tells the Chicago Tribune that two trains were on the same tracks when they hit, toppling onto parallel tracks carrying the third train, which was heading west. The source did not know if the other two trains were also westbound, as the Post-Tribune reported.

Two crew members were hospitalized with injuries described as not life threatening.

Update at 4:13 p.m. ET: The Post-Tribune reports that the accident involved three westbound CSX freight trains. One train apparently stopped or slowed, causing a chain-reaction crash with the following two trains.

The paper also says that the accident caused "damage to passenger cars," apparently referring to vehicles stopped at crossings. So far, there are reports of at least two injuries but no fatalities.

Residents within a mile were evacuated.

One train was carrying ethanol. NBC Chicago has live video of the crash scene in Jackson Township, Porter County. The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. CT (2:30 p.m. ET).

NBC reports two trains were involved, while the Chicago Tribune says three, citing the sheriff's department.
