In Mexico, 12,000 killed in drug violence in 2011

MEXICO CITY — Some 12,000 people died in Mexico's spiraling drug violence last year, according to grim annual tallies reported Monday by the country's leading media outlets, with indices of torture, beheading and the murder of women all up.

More than 50,000 people have been slain in the five years since President Felipe Calderon's U.S.-backed military confrontation against organized crime and drug trafficking began in late 2006.
