In a sandwich-crazed city, it’s torta time

Can someone explain why the torta has yet to fully capture the attention of D.C. diners?

Washington is a pretty solid sandwich city. Consider the wonderful options at Taylor Gourmet, Horace and Dickie's, Fast Gourmet, Sundevich, Earl's and myriad Vietnamese delis, to name but a few.

But while banh mi, Italian-style hoagies, meatball grinders and even the Uruguayan chivito have had their moment in the spotlight, the torta, a traditional Mexican sandwich and staple of West Coast taquerias and food trucks, toils here in relative obscurity.
