COLUMBIA, S.C. — If the New Hampshire primary is all over but the shouting, then it's time for South Carolina to brace for the whispers.
With just 10 days to go before the Jan. 21 primary and some conservatives openly desperate to halt the momentum of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, voters and political operatives alike are girding for the kind of whisper campaigns, viral innuendo and dubious personal attacks that have made South Carolina a state where the politics are as harsh as the tea is sweet. Already, a blitz of negative ads are expected to hit the airwaves, funded by outside groups that have no intention of using their inside voices.
