Chen Guangcheng, the blind, self-taught lawyer known for outspoken opposition to China's forced abortion and sterilization policies, has fled house arrest and is being protected by U.S. diplomats in Beijing, a friend and fellow activist said. The U.S. State Department would not confirm or deny that it was sheltering Chen or comment on his status, days before Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is due to visit China for political and economic talks.
