Ferries to Take over Collapsed Bridge Function in Indonesia

"We have prepared two ferries," the minister who is now in East Kalimantan to observe the accident said through his cellular phone when contacted here on Sunday.

The minister said that the collapsed bridge had so far served as the main lane of the economic activities of the people of Tenggarong and its surrounding. "In order not to disturb the activities of the local people, the government is preparing two ferries to cater those who want to cross the river," the minister said.

He said that with the operations of the two ships, all people, including civil servants, students, teachers, medical workers, goods and services vehicles and others, would be able to carry out their activities as usual.

The coordinating minister for people’s welfare said that the government through the public works ministry would audit the collapse of the bridge in East Kalimantan. The Kutai Kartanegara bridge spanning 500 meters over the Makam river of which 270 meters are suspended, did not have pillars.
