Finland Will Annihilate All Stock Landmine

Finland has decided to destroy landmine stockpiles, amounting to about one million units in 2016. The decision came after the country's parliament approved the ban on the use of weapons such antipersonel, Friday (25/11/2011).

Of the total 199 members of parliament of Finland, 110 people had agreed to the ban, while 47 people were refused and 42 absent.

With the approval of this parliament, Finland can step forward to sign the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty. The decision is currently living in the hands of the President of Finland, Tarja Halonen.

Finnish Army plans to replace the use of landmines defensive system with the new surveillance systems involving Claymore mines. In contrast to conventional mines that exploded was so crushed, Claymore mines detonated by remote control and direction of the explosion can be arranged.

"This international treaty is important for western mines banned worldwide. This weapon does not distinguish between civilians and soldiers," said Annika Lapintie, Chairman of the Left Alliance in parliament.

According to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), the treaty has been ratified by 158 countries, but the U.S., Russia, and China has yet to join. (Reuters / DHF)
