Tablet Outsells iPad on Black Friday

Many gadgets have been hyped as the 'iPad Killer' - but the world of technology is littered with their forgotten carcasses. When Amazon unveiled its cheap, entertainment-oriented Fire, and the phrase was bandied about yet again, insiders stifled a yawn.

But Fire outsold Kindle this 'Black Friday' - a major upset for Apple. But this time, there's something to it - not only has it been Amazon's best-selling product for eight weeks, but Amazon's cheap seven-inch Kindle Fire has struck the first convincing blow against Apple's all-conquering techno-slab.

'Kindle Fire was the bestselling tablet in our stores on Black Friday,' said Nik Nayar, vice president of merchandising at Target.

Rival Best Buy were less forthcoming with figures, but equally effusive, 'We knew Kindle Fire and the new E Ink Kindles would be highly desirable gifts this holiday season,' said Wendy Fritz, senior vice president of Computing, Tablets and e-Readers at Best Buy.

'If this Black Friday was any indication, they are only getting hotter as we get into the shopping season.'

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving in the U.S. - and traditionally among the biggest shopping days of the year - marking the start of the Christmas season.

It's a major blow for Apple, whose market share has begun to dwindle. Strategy Analytics reported that Apple's market share had fallen from 96 per cent to 67 per cent.

The reason could be simple - Apple is simply running out of rich people. There is a very limited pool of people prepared to spend £499 on a tablet computer that many still see as a toy rather than a work tool.

Amazon's Kindle Fire - $200 to iPad's $500 -

'It is clear that the iPad is experiencing slowing growth,'observed IDC analyst Tom Mainelli last month.

'Many of the affluent consumers most likely to spend $500 or more on an iPad in markets such as the United States have already done so.'

Apple might be the brandname on everybody's lips, but it seems the time could be ripe for a replacement.

Amazon is betting heavily on Kindle Fire - with a smartphone follow-up rumoured next year, and Amazon's decades-old reputation in internet entertainment providing users with something to do on its new gizmos.
