Three Rivers Polluted by Industrial Waste in Tangerang

Environmentalists said that there were three rivers in Tangerang, Banten, which had been contaminated by industrial wastes.

"Three rivers in Tangerang have been polluted by industrial refuse as a result of uncontrolled use of surface water," Executive Director of the Green Fortuna Forum, Rommy Revolvere said here on Monday.

He said that the three rivers were river Ciracab in Mauk, river Cimanceuri in Balaraja and river Cisadane. Of the three, the Ciracab in Mauk is the one which is experiencing the most serious condition.

The pollution of the river occurred because of the lack of control by the authority concerned. "The condition is saddening owing to the fact that the Ciraca river is not handled properly."

He said that the disposal of industrial waste into the river had been taking place for a long time. The local government did not supervise the river tightly, while residents around the river used its water.

Therefore, his side called on the government to control the use of surface and ground water in the area by industries or factories. He said that the presence of some 4000 industries or factories in Tangerang would cause the depreciation of ground water in the area so that it need supervision.

Rommy said that many residents in Tangerang had sufferred from shortage of water and dryness as well as from respiratory complaints. Respiratory complaints are now a main health problem suffered by many residents in Tangerang, he said.
