In the typical fashion of any awards show, questions are raised about the fairness of the results, and for the 45th TVB Anniversary Awards, many are unsatisfied with Wayne Lai and Tavia Yeung's victories.
According to Jaynestars, after the conclusion of TVB Anniversary Awards on 17 December, many complaints have already poured in about Wayne Lai's triumph over the crowd's favourite, Raymond Lam. There are also speculations that the votes for TVB Queen were tampered with and that Tavia Yeung has taken the throne from its rightful owner, Charmaine Sheh.
According to results released by TVB, there were 1.543 million total votes placed for the Anniversary Awards, with Wayne Lai receiving 114,947 votes and Tavia Yeung, 110,795 votes. However, "When Heaven Burns" unexpectedly
won the Best Series award with 84,472 votes even when its cast failed to win any awards.
In addition, a TVB insider alleged that Charmaine Sheh had in fact received the most votes for Best Actress due to the popularity of "When Heaven Burns" but the result was adjusted since Charmaine is no longer a TVB managed artist. TVB also received 24 complaints from fans over the unfairness of the Best Actor results towards Raymond Lam, who lost the popular vote despite his sizable fan base.
Meanwhile, when asked why the number of votes for Wayne and Tavia had a significant gap from the total pool of 1.543 million votes, TVB Deputy Director of External Affairs, Tsang Sing Ming explained, "There were a total of 1.543 million votes, not unique voters. The voters may not have participated in voting for all three categories. They may have only voted in one awards category. There were 10 finalists for Best Actor, 10 finalists for Best Actress, and 24 nominees for Best Series. So the results are proportional."
However, Tsang Sing Ming stated that the company will not reveal the complete votes each nominee had received.
